Activated 18.7.68 in Vilnius, Lithuanian SSR, replacing the 265th Motorised Rifle Division, which was transferrred to the Far East.

Organisation 1970:

In 1972 the 597th Motorised Rifle Regiment was used to activate the new 153rd Motorised Rifle Division (mobilisation), and was replaced by the 77th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment, from the 26th Guards Motorised Rifle Division.

15.11.72 re-organised:

In 1980 the 000 independent Motor Transport Battalion was renamed 1029th independent Material Supply Battalion.
