Activated 5.77 in Tskhinvali, South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast, from an unknown independent Helicopter Squadron.

7.1.80 transferred to Vaziani, Tbilisi Oblast, and flown to Kokayty, Surkhandaria Oblast in An-22 transports - helicopters assembled, and flown to Kunduz, Afghanistan - arriving 10.1.80. In mid-2.80 the first squadron is transferred to Jalalabad, while the third squadron arrives in Kunduz from Tskhinvali. Both the 2nd and 3rd squadrons are transferred from Kunduz to Jalalabad in late March 1980.

3.83 to 3.84 and 3.85 to 3.86 - selected crews operated as the 2nd squadron/50th independent Mixed Aviation Regiment in Afghanistan.
