Several regiments based in the Soviet
Union, would detach crews to serve in the 50th independent Mixed Aviation Regiment
on a rotational basis, beginning from 1980 - usually for the duration of one
year.
1980-1989 in Afghanistan:

1st AE: operated An-12 and An-26 from Kabul

2nd AE: operated Mi-24V/D from Kabul, mid-86 renamed 3rd AE;
2nd AE reformed with An-26RT/RR/M and An-30

3rd AE: operated Mi-8MT/VKP from Kabul, mid-86 renamed 4th
AE; 3rd AE formed from old 2nd AE with Mi-24V/P; disbanded mid-88

4th AE: activated mid-86 from the old 3rd AE with Mi-8MT/MB;
disbanded mid-88
4.89 rebuilt by absorbing the
66th and
248th independent Mixed
Aviation Squadrons.
1.1.92 taken over by Belorussia - 1994 renamed 50th Transport
Aviation Base.
