3.4.78 renamed 14th independent Special Forces Brigade GRU.

The 334th independent Special Forces Unit was partly staffed by the 14th independent Special Forces Brigade, while in Afghanistan.

Organisation:

• 282nd independent Special Forces Unit (Matveevka, Khabarovsk Kray) - military unit: 20662

• 294th independent Special Forces Unit (Belogorsk, Amur Oblast) - joined the brigade in 1987 - military unit: 20706

• 308th independent Special Forces Unit (Ussuryisk, Primorskiy Kray) - mobilisation unit until 1998 - military unit: 20707

• 546th independent Special Forces Unit (Belogorsk, Amur Oblast) - mobilisation unit, later disbanded

• 742nd independent Special Forces Unit (Matveevka, Khabarovsk Kray)

Part of the brigade took part in a joint Russian/US exercise in Alaska 2.9.94 to 18.9.94.

17.1.94 to 27.4.95 took part in the first Chechen war.

8.12.99 to 8.2006 the 294th independent Special Forces Unit was deployed to Chechnya (mainly based in Khankala - 43 18 16N, 45 45 30E).
