The 334th independent Special Forces Unit (military unit: 83397; 83506 while in Afghanistan) was activated 13.1.85 for service in Afghanistan - deployed to Afghanistan 20.3.85 to 1.6.88 - cover designation was 5th Motorised Rifle Battalion - operated from Asadabad (34 52 12N, 71 09 26E) - attached to the 15th independent Special Forces Brigade GRU while in Afghanistan.

24.1.90 to 3.3.90 most of the brigade was deployed to Yerevan, Armenian SSR for peacekeeping operations.

31.12.92 taken over by Belarus.
