The 173rd independent Special Forces Unit was deployed to Afghanistan 2.84 to 15.8.88 - cover designation was 3rd Motorised Rifle Battalion - operated from Kandahar - attached to the 22nd independent Special Forces Brigade GRU from 25.3.85 - remained with the 22nd independent Special Forces Brigade GRU after Afghanistan.
Several deployments took place in the 1988-1992 period:
11.88 to 12.88 three companies deployed to Zagatala, Azerbaizhan SSR, for peacekeeping operations
9.4. to 21.4.89 part of the brigade was deployed to Tskhinvali, Gerogian SSR
1989 deployed to the Armenian cities Vanadzor, Leninakan and Pambak, to deal with unrest
1991 deployed to Nagorno-Karabakh
1991-1992 deployed to South Ossetia
The 33rd independent Special Forces Unit took part in the Chechen war 1.95 to 4.95, was deployed to Dagestan 13.8.99 and again to Chechnya 1.4.2000.
