Activated 24.12.47 in Bucharest, Romania, as the Special Mechanised Army.

Organisation 1947:

In 4.48 the 4th Guards Mechanised Division was transferred to the Kiev Military District.

In 8.49 the 2nd Guards Mechanised Division was transferred to Hungary, and was replaced, a month later, by the 33rd Guards Mechanised Division.

Organisation 1950:

In 11.53 the 81st Guards Rifle Division arrived from the Kiev Military District.

Organisation 1950:

4.6.57 renamed 1st independent Combined Arms Army.

In 7.57 the 81st Guards Motorised Rifle Division returned to the Kiev Military District.

Organisation 1958:

7.58 renamed 1st Combined Arms Army.

Organisation 1960:

5.10.67 renamed 1st Guards Combined Arms Army, inheriting the Guards title from the old 1st Guards Combined Arms Army, at the behest of Defence Minister Grechko, who had commanded this army in World War 2.

22.2.68 awarded the Red Banner.

In 7.69 the 81st Guards Motorised Rifle Division was transferred to the Far East, and was replaced by the 47th Motorised Rifle Division.
