Activated 15.12.78 in Sokol, Saratov Oblast - formation complete 8.79.

The 3rd squadron was detached to Brandis in 1980, while the 1st squadron was detached to Parchim in 3.81.

In 1981 eight crews from the 1st squadron was detached to Shindand, Afghanistan, while in 1984 the rest of the 1st squadron went to Tskhinvali, South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast - in 8.84 all were attached to the 50th independent Mixed Aviation Regiment.

Selected crews from the 2nd squadron served under the 4th Squadron/280th independent Helicopter Regiment (Mi-24) at Kandahar, 1984-1985.
