Activated 7.6.46 in Narva, Estonian SSR, from the 104th Guards Rifle Division.

Organisation 1947:

1.10.48 the 346th Guards Air Landing Regiment was used to activate the 21st Guards Airborne Division, and was replaced by the new 337th Guards Air Landing Regiment.

In 1.49 the 337th Guards Air Landing Regiment were converted and renamed 337th Guards Parachute Regiment.

In 1949 the 11th independent Air-Landing Security Company was disbanded.

15.11.53 re-organized:

30.4.55 the independent Tank Destroyer Battalion was activated, and the 578th independent Guards Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion was renamed the 75th independent Guards Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion.

In 4.55 the 116th independent Military-Transport Aviation Squadron was activated with 10 An-2 aircraft.

25.4.55 the 97th Guards Parachute Regiment joined the division, from the disbanded 21st Guards Airborne Division.

In 1959 the 97th Guards Parachute Regiment was transferred to the 7th Guards Airborne Division, and was replaced by the 80th Guards Parachute Regiment from the same division.

In 1971 the 611th Air-Landing Security Battalion was activated.

1.10.76 the 891st independent Rocket Artillery Battalion was disbanded, and was absorbed by the Artillery Regiment, while the 24th independent Equipment Maintenance and Recovery Battalion was activated from the independent repair shop.

3.8.79 the 80th Guards Parachute Regiment was disbanded, and was used to activate the 39th and 40th independent Air-Landing Assault Brigades.

Organisation 1980:

1.12.80 the 387th Guards Parachute Regiment was activated as the new third regiment in the division.

13.5.82 the 387th Guards Parachute Regiment left the division, and was transferred to Fergana, Fergana Oblast, as the 387th independent Guards Parachute Regiment.

In 1986 the 75th independent Guards Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion was disbanded, and was absorbed by the Artillery Regiment.

2.89 the 345th Guards Parachute Regiment arrived from Afghanistan, and joined the division as the new third regiment.

Organisation 1989:

9.93 the 345th Guards Parachute Regiment was transferred to the 7th Guards Airborne Division.
