Activated 1960 in Olenegorsk, Murmansk Oblast, as the 361st Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, from the 361st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment.

Initially four S-75 battalions, followed by 4 S-125 (SA-3) battalions in 1965.

Organisation 1960's:

2.68 awarded the Red Banner.

1968 renamed 39th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.

In 1968 an independent Anti-Aircraft Missile Group with 3 launch S-200 (SA-5) battalions were added to the brigade:

1970's and 1980's with 3 S-200V (SA-5), 4 S-75 (SA-2) and 4 S-125 (SA-3) battalions.

1988 began conversion to the S-300PM/PS (SA-10) missiles:

1991 with 3 S-200V (SA-5), 4 S-125 (SA-3) and 3 S-300PS/PM (SA-10) battalions.

1994 renamed 583rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

2009 with 2 S-300PS (SA-10) and 2 S-300PMU (SA-20) battalions.
