Activated 1961 in Kerstovo, Leningrad Oblast, as the 196th Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, from the 144th Guards Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade.

Initially with 4 S-75 (SA-2) battalions, followed by 2 S-125 (SA-3) battalions in 1961, and four more in 1967.

6.68 renamed 204th Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.

Organisation 1960's (4 S-75 and 6 S-125 battalions):

During 1970/1971 an independent Anti-Aircraft Missile Group with 3 launch S-200V (SA-5) battalions were added to the brigade (first unit with the S-200V missile):

One S-75 (SA-2) battalion was disbanded 1971.

1970's and 1980's with 3 S-200V (SA-5), 3 S-75 (SA-2) and 6 S-125 (SA-3) battalions.

Late 1980's re-equipped with the S-300PS missile:

1994 renamed 1491st Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment.

Disbanded 1998.
