Activated 13.1.55 in Mishukov, Murmansk Oblast, as the 601st independent Hydrographic Ship Battalion, from the 1st Hyrdrographic Ship Unit.

1.10.79 renamed 601st independent Oceanographic Research Ship Battalion.

In 1986 parts of the battalion (1019th Hydrographic Ship Group) was used to activated the 263rd independent Hydrographic Ship Battalion, also based at Mishukov. There were many ship transfers to and from the two battalions, for which unfortunately details are lacking.
