Activated 30.10.42 as the 5th Bomber Aviation Brigade.

20.7.43 renamed 5th Maritime Torpedo Aviation Division.

Organisation 1945:

• 9th Guards Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-1, Murmansk Oblast) with Il-4 and A-20
• 36th Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-1, Murmansk Oblast) with A-20
• 255th Fighter Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-1, Murmansk Oblast) with P-39

In July 1945 the 36th Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment was transferred to the Pacific Fleet, and was replaced by the 46th Assault Aviation Regiment.

In 1947 the 574th Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment joined the division, while the 46th Assault Aviation Regiment left in 10.47.

In 1952 the 1941st Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment joined the division.

The 255th Fighter Aviation Regiment left the division in 1953.

• 9th Guards Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-1, Murmansk Oblast) with Tu-14
• 574th Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Yagodnik, Arkhangelsk Oblast) with Il-28
• 1941st Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-3, Murmansk Oblast) with Tu-14

In 8.54 the 574th Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment was transferred to the 599th Mixed Aviation Division.

In 4.55 the 924th Guards Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment joined the division.

3.10.57 renamed 5th Long-Range Maritime Torpedo Aviation Division.

• 924th Guards Maritime Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-3, Murmansk Oblast) with Tu-16

5.5.61 renamed 5th Maritime Missile Aviation Division.

1.6.71 the 9th Guards Maritime Missile Aviation Regiment left for the Baltic Fleet.

• 924th Guards Maritime Missile Aviation Regiment (Olenegorsk (Olenya), Murmansk Oblast) with Tu-16
• 987th Maritime Missile Aviation Regiment (Severomorsk-3, Murmansk Oblast) with Tu-16

2.83 the 574th Maritime Missile Aviation Regiment joined the division.
