Activated 4.6.57 in Constanza, Romania, as the 37th Guards Tank Division, from the 25th Guards Mechanised Division.

In 1960 the 69th independent Tank Training Battalion was disbanded.

19.2.62 the 000 independent Missile Battalion and the 129th independent Equipment Maintenance and Recovery Battalion was activated.

11.1.65 renamed 17th Guards Tank Division.

In 1968 the 26th independent Guards Sapper Battalion was renamed 26th independent Guards Engineer-Sapper Battalion.

In 1972 the 00 independent Chemical Defence Company was renamed 44th independent Chemical Defence Battalion.

In 1980 the 000 independent Motor Transport Battalion was renamed 1055th independent Material Supply Battalion.

In 6.89 the 1158th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment was transferred to East Germany, and was replaced by the 1069th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, from the 47th Guards Tank Division.

In 6.90 the 25th Tank Regiment and the 92nd Tank Regiment from the 58th Tank Division (mobilisation), replaced the 216th Guards Tank Regiment and the 224th Tank Regiment.

In 6.90 the 256th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment was united with the 187th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment from East Germany, and was renamed 187th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment.
