Activated 22.11.60 in Lugansk. Lugansk Oblast, as a mobilisation division.

The division was unmanned, except for some pre-assigned officers, serving with the parent division (4th Guards Motorised Rifle Division) - the equipment set was co-located with the 4th Guards Motorised Rifle Division until 4.68.

In 1968 the 225th independent Sapper Battalion was renamed 225th independent Engineer-Sapper Battalion.

In 4.68 converted to a normal division, and was transferred to the Far East.

In 1968 the 537th Motorised Rifle Regiment was replaced by the 199th Motorised Rifle Regiment, from the 129th Training Motorised Rifle Division, while the 152nd independent Tank Battalion was activated.

In 1980 the 000 independent Motor Transport Battalion was renamed 1136th independent Material Supply Battalion.

1.10.89 renamed 130th Machine-Gun Artillery Division.

In 10.89 the 199th Motorised Rifle Regiment was disbanded, and was replaced by the 365th Machine-Gun Artillery Regiment (activated from the 17th Fortified Area).

In 1994 the 365th Machine-Gun Artillery Regiment was renamed 199th Motorised Rifle Regiment.

1.6.2009 renamed 39th independent Motorised Rifle Brigade.
