Activated 1970 in Mary, Mary Oblast.

Probably better known as 1521st Aviation Base - operated 1979 to 1988 as a way station for aircraft going to and from Afghanistan, as well as host to heavy bomber aviation regiments, flying missions over Afghanistan.

Operated two squadrons, with the 2nd squadron being the aggressor squadron - training other units in air-to-air combat over the Ashuluk Range.

1.1.92 taken over by Turkmenistan.
