Activated 5.42 as the 220th Fighter Aviation Division.
4.2.43 renamed 1st Guards Fighter Aviation Division.
Organisation 5.45:
When the 273rd Fighter Aviation Division was disbanded 12.45, the 30th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment became the 4th regiment of the division.
In March 1947 all divisions reverted to three regiments, and the 55th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was disbanded.
Organisation 1949:
In 3.60 the 54th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was transferred to the Air Defense Forces (PVO), and was replaced by the 899th Fighter Aviation Regiment.
The 30th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was disbanded in 8.59.
Organisation 1960:
In 1977 the VVS (Air Force) and PVO (Air Defense Forces) were re-organised in the Baltic states and the Leningrad Oblast (a trial run for the larger re-organisation in 1980 covering the whole country) - all fighter units in the PVO were transferred to the VVS, the PVO only retaining the anti-aircraft missile units and radar units - the 6th independent Air Defense Army was disbanded, and the 15th Air Army became the VVS Baltic Military District.
Organisation 1977:
In 1981 the 899th Fighter Aviation Regiment left the division, and became a fighter-bomber aviation regiment.
1.83 to 15.4.86 the 689th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was part of the division.
Organisation 1986:
In 1986 the VVS and PVO was reorganised again, now to the state both was in before 1977 (1980) - the 6th independent Air Defense Army was reformed - the 54th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment now came under the PVO again, and later (1988) the VVS Baltic Military District was renamed the 15th Air Army again.
The division was disbanded in mid-1986.
